Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

Friendly & challenging environment. You are treated as an engineer and not as an intern. Given freedom to pursue projects at your own pace and at your own direction.

What I wish was different

More support from within and in other departments on the projects I was assigned. However, this was due to limited resources and should not reflect the character of the employees.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help or for more information.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2016 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

This was my third internship with the same company and the last I would have before graduating, so they gave me a lot more responsibility. I was given the chance to work independently on a project, design and run my own experiment, while still having a head engineer I could turn to when I got stuck. This was a great opportunity because it really made me accountable for the project I was on. They weren't just giving me busy work to do, they let me see what it would really be like in a professional engineering environment.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of red tape that prohibited how fast I could work, and it surprised me. Bausch + Lomb is a large pharmaceutical company, so they have a lot of procedures and sign offs that need to occur before you can move onto the next step of a project, and although I know it's completely necessary, it was just something that I had to get used to.

Advice

Try to get as involved as possible. Even if they just give you busy work, try to figure out what it is for and what you can gain from it. If there is an engineer you are working closely with, try to follow them around, go to meetings with them and see what their day to day duties are like. This is how I learned the most was by following around a lead engineer as he jumped from problem to problem. Don't be afraid to be annoying!
