At CNS I observed the procedure in which Ian assessed each patient alongside his staff in order to design individual lessons. Evaluating the patient’s medical and cognitive goals and incorporating musical strategies as a tool for meeting those goals. Some examples include the use of paddle drumming to improve balance, singing preferred songs to improve speech patterns, using djembe drumming techniques to improve and regain hand strength and sensations, improve cognitive awareness, and improve memory.
What I wish was different
Nothing! It was so great to be exposed to the specific environment
Advice
Attending this experience was eye-opening for me, to observe the level of professionalism and comprehensive knowledge that a musician gains after completing graduate school. Be flexible and enjoy the connections you make with amazing patients
