Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Livingston, TX

What I liked

I liked the experience of being able to change student's lives through the Gospel. We did bible studies and musical worship daily, while still getting much physical activity. I felt like I truly had an impact on camper's lives. It is a very beautiful place as well, and I love scenery.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to choose my age group instead of being put in one that I was good at. I enjoyed having older kids more than younger kids.

Advice

I would encourage people interested in a camp position to be able to be patient. Children are very crazy a lot, and sometimes there is much deeper things in their mind that are causing them to act out. Be patient with them and get to know them personally.

Recreation Team and Worship Leader

May - August 2018 • Livingston, TX

What I liked

Tons of opportunities for spiritual growth, and the job itself is super fun! Working with all ages of kids every week keeps things interested and new, and then the recreation team is involved with basically all the activities in some way, but the ropes course, zipline, and aquatics stuff are awesome! It's an amazing experience to be able to share God's Word with kids in and through His creation and the crazy life of summer camp.

What I wish was different

The Texas weather in that area is SO HUMID and SO HOT. But then again, I'm originally from up North (WI), so it's difficult not to be dramatic about that. But seriously, you step outside for maybe 30 seconds and you're already sweating... totally worth it though!

Advice

As with nearly every situation in life, don't expect people to reach out to you. The community there is really, really solid, but if you don't actively include yourself at the beginning of summer, you're probably gonna feel left out. Cho-Yeh people aren't exclusive, but the amount of relationship building that happens all at once right at the beginning of summer can leave a few people behind by accident if you don't get involved.

Summer Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Livingston, TX

What I liked

I absolutely loved everything about this job. I myself was a camper at this camp and then a counselor, making this my eighth year with Camp Cho-Yeh all together. This camp is a dream and even a home away from home. It allows kids to seek out their Christian beliefs and values as well as enjoying the good outdoors while making life long friends.

What I wish was different

I wish summer lasted longer so I was able to stay at camp much longer. This job is an incredible way to reach out and connect with so many people, making it a hard job to leave when summer ends.

Advice

If you have ever considered being a camp counselor, do not hesitate to apply. It can be the best experience and even a once in a life time chance to truly have fun and play around and it's considered working. As a college student it can be hard to find a summer job, but camp counselors are always being sought after making it an easy and fun way to earn a paycheck.
