Camp Tapawingo

Camp EMT

June - August 2023 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

I appreciated how welcoming the Tapawingo community was. I felt like I could be myself and that everyone there wanted me to succeed. As far as the Health Center goes, I felt like we had adequate resources and interaction with the campers. I also loved the proximity to cool day trips - it made off-days more fun!

What I wish was different

I wish there were more spaces for feedback and better communication between the team as a whole. I felt like the subgroups within the team (bunk counselors, trip staff, health center, etc) were able to communicate well, but there was very little collaboration between all the groups.

Advice

Camp can be very overwhelming at first. Hang in there, find your groove, and make the best of all situations. Jump in on new adventures - they. might end up being your favorite memories!

Wilderness Trip Leader

June - August 2023 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

In looking for post-grad opportunities, I stumbled upon the Wilderness Trip Leader position at Camp Tapawingo. As a long-time outdoor enthusiast, it felt like the perfect way to spend time outdoors, working with children, and building my skills before the entering the "real world" after college. In working at Camp Tapawingo, I learned invaluable skills in trip planning, project management and execution, teamwork, effective communication, and team leadership. I also had the opportunity to explore incredible outdoor places I never would've had the chance to see otherwise. Camp Tapawingo has an excellent support system that truly feels like family. Your team is always ready to support you and wants to see you succeed. This was truly one of the most impactful experiences I have ever had!

What I wish was different

Camp Tapawingo has room to grow in staff communication.

Advice

You truly get out what you put into camp, so I would recommend being as open as possible to new experiences and embracing all that camp life has to offer.

Landsports + Senior Bunk Counselor

June - August 2021 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

Tapawingo has a strong community that makes you feel at home no matter how far from home you are. Camp Tap is a positive work environment. While here you'll receive progress reports throughout the summer with an evaluation of your performance. The staff is friendly and willing to assist you in whatever capacity necessary. Meg the Landsports Head is the most caring and energetic person you'll ever meet. This experience taught me how to roll with the punches, while improving my delegation and teamwork skills. Through my coaching internship I had the opportunity to coach/teach kids in multiple sports through competitions and practices. I was also given the freedom to create and execute an internship project where I put on the first ever "Tap Olympics." If you're looking for an opportunity to make an impact on children, be in a setting that is one with nature, to work with the most genuine and compassionate people, and have an experience you will never forget, Camp Tapawingo is the place for you.

What I wish was different

Tapawingo has room for improvement through their communication skills.

Advice

This experience is emotionally and physically exhausting but also one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. If you're up for the challenge apply to Camp Tapawingo, you won't regret it.

Bunk counselor and swim instructor

June - August 2021 • Sweden, ME

What I liked

I loved how open and accepting everyone at camp was. There was always somebody willing to help you out or a shoulder to lean on if you needed. The people at this camp is really what makes it so great.

What I wish was different

Sometimes camp wasn’t the best at communicating information but everything always worked out just fine

Advice

You get as much out of this job as you put into it. My summer was so much fun because I spent my free time participating in other department activities and fully embraced all of camps traditions.

What I liked

The community at this camp is strong. I truly felt like a member of the family and supported by everyone I worked with. I could tell they wanted me to succeed.

Advice

Go all in and fully commit to the experience. If you're scared to be yourself or to be silly, the two months won't be as much fun.
