What I liked

I loved getting to create such close relationship with the campers each week

What I wish was different

No COVID so some camp activites could have happened more regularly

Advice

Pray up. The more time spent praying over my cabin led to more great conversation, and overall interaction with the girls in my cabin.

What I liked

I loved the Christian atmosphere that Camp had to offer. It was so great to be put in positions that really stretched me and forced me out of my comfort zone. I did things I never thought I could and it was God through me that did it.

What I wish was different

There were a lot of changes due to Covid so I would like to return during a normal summer.

Advice

I would recommend this experience to any person who loves Jesus and loves spending time with kids. I would advise people to come in knowing that it is exhausting but so rewarding.

What I liked

I liked my co counselors and the staff over me. I also enjoyed getting to spend a lot of time with young children and helping them grow.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more personal time. Counselors have an hour to themselves every other day.

Advice

I would recommend getting your certification in ropes during preorientation at Camp War Eagle.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Rogers, AR

What I liked

I liked working with kids of Northwest Arkansas from very diverse backgrounds. The joy in teaching these kids both soft and hard skills is worth the whole job. Celebrating accomplishments, big and small, is one of the best parts of the job.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more support from the top down. While I felt supported from the Top Staff right above counselors, there doesn't seem to be much support from higher management to the Top Staff, which affects the counselors level of confidence and engagement.

Advice

This is a hard job. A majority of the kids that come to Camp War Eagle are from broken homes with medium-low income levels. You will see brokenness, and it is your job to support other counselors through the difficulty and burdensome moments.

I really enjoyed all of the lifelong friendships I made over the summer! I also loved getting to impact so many children living in Northwest Arkansas and share the gospel with them. It was truly a great summer of growth and reflection!

Advice

I would advise someone to really think about working here and make sure that it is something they want to do because it is a very rewarding job, but it will take up most of the summer and can be very tiring.

What I liked

I liked that I had the ability to impact kids' lives through having fun with them and serving behind the scenes to make sure that things ran as smooth as they could for the kids' experience. I got to share the Gospel with the kids and show them that they are loved. I also liked that I was able to make lifelong friends with the people that I worked with through this ministry.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Rogers, AR

What I liked

My coworkers were an incredible support system and friend group! I learned so much about friendship, vulnerability, and the body of Christ through them. Also, I had the opportunity to do things at camp that I would rarely do otherwise, like hang out with reptiles, zipline, learn dances, see fireworks, and stay active! Lastly, the difference camp counselors make on their campers lives is incomparable. I'll never forget my campers.

What I wish was different

It is so hard to get sleep as a camp counselor! Especially on Top Staff! It seems like every time I could prioritize sleep, I chose something else. Luckily, our team does a great job of getting us to bed and prioritizing that, but the exhaustion hits toward the end of the summer. Thanks be to God that the hope and emotional energy of others usually hits then, too.

Advice

Know that it will change you. You will be stretched outside your comfort zone and come face-to-face with some life changing encouragement and hard situations. But you will better understand what it is to serve, what it is to be loved, and what it is to have fun.
