Carroll College

Academic Technology Intern

May - August 2022 • Helena, MT

What I liked

Loved the amount of things I'd done, along with each activity strongly contributing to a real world work environment. Adjusting projectors, starting and completing big projects, and having my hands in as many pies as I was given made the work experience seem that much more fulfilling. I did alot, and I definitely learned alot.

What I wish was different

Some days were lull days, in which not much happened. Also I wish the pay had been better. While Carroll is a great place to learn, many student employee's, myself included, are looking to other jobs/internships within our field to make money. This was a great learning opportunity, however I definitely needed a bump in pay.

Advice

Definitely dress appropriately. While it may be hot or cold outside, walking between buildings carrying a small tote full of electronics or even wheeling a whiteboard around campus will be hell if you don't actively watch the forecast and plan accordingly.

What I liked

You get to have hands on experiences in fields you want to go into and understand the dynamic of a lab setting which you may not otherwise get from just classwork.

What I wish was different

I wish that my research times worked better when also working a second job.

Advice

If you ever get an offer to take part in an experience that is unlike anything you have done before, do not hesitate. It could change your life!

Biology Research Assistant

May 2018 • Helena, MT

What I liked

Getting a new experience in the biology field with hands on work that you would experience in a graduate program.

What I wish was different

The initial time expectation had been closer to what it turned out to be. I was expected to put in more hours than I actually needed to.

Advice

I would highly recommend taking at least one summer or semester to do research to discover different fields that you can go into with a biology degree. Also, if you initially don't like the research you are doing, maybe try a different type because there is a big difference between being in the lab all the time and getting to go out in the field.
