Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

Unit Secretary

April 2022 • Decatur, GA

What I liked

I like that I am able to have a genuine relationship with some of the doctors and nurses. I also have built connections that have left a major impact on me as a soon to be first generation college graduate. I admire alot of the people I work with and I love to learn new things everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more workers that were also working night shift like myself. It's been pretty difficult to find someone who can cover my shift in case of an emergency (which I rarely ever need because I am not the type of employee to call off unless it is super serious) and also the other Unit Secretaries are not very reliable in this ED. There is only me and one other person who works full time. The other unit secretary is called for back-up and then the other one works like every other day because of their second job. So, the schedulers of my department always expect people to pick up shifts. I know I did pick up alot of shifts in the summer while also taking summer classes. However, I can not do that this time around in the fall because I am working, interning, and taking 5 other classes.

Advice

I would say be mindful of the pro's and con's. Make sure you can handle the load of a Unit Secretary before accepting the position.
