COVID caused us to transfer from knocked door to door to instead doing phone banks. I would’ve much rather been in the field rather than on the phone.

Para teacher
May - July 2019 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
The work environment was very easy to adjust to. The school’s community of teachers and staff was very welcoming. The thing I liked most about working there was the opportunity to help students succeed in materials they struggled in or needed more time in. As a para, I liked how there was more of an opportunity to work with students one on one and motivate them to stick to the work needed to be done in class.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish that had been different is remembering to pack a lunch everyday. The lunch break is generous, but the nearest fast food place was about 8 minutes away and there wasn’t a grocery store near by. So that was really on me. The experience over all was very well managed.
Advice
You don’t have to be going into the Education field as your career to be a para teacher for your summer job. It’s an extremely rewarding experience that had an immediate impact on these students lives. You aren’t always seen as a teacher, but you’re always seen as a mentor and guide through their elementary school experience.
