The ability to showcase your talents as an individual was the best thing I got to do here. Allow yourself to be seen because then only can you be recognized.

What I wish was different

Wish I was paid a lot more for the work that I did for the company.

UX/ UI Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the organization of the internship. They had activities every week where the interns could meet executives at Coach. We were also given mentors, so we had even more connections by the end of our internship. The second thing I really enjoyed was that I was able to work on real projects. For example, I worked on a module for a pop up shop website that was actually used. The final thing I loved was how there was a case study you were given that you presented at the end that was super interesting and fun to collab with other interns.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different was that I wish they had monitored the case study project more, because there were clearly some kids doing more work than other and it started to feel like a school group project. However, it is important to note this is the first year they had a case study project.

Advice

Try and make connections. One of the biggest things I have taken from my internship this summer was being able to add mentors to my contacts. Even having conversations and getting advice was extremely valuable and meaningful.

Sales Associate

June - August 2018 • Deer Park, NY

What I liked

It gave me a front end experience dealing with the clientele in the area. As someone who would like to own her own business, communicating with clients is a very important skill to learn. Not every client was a pleasant experience to help, but it taught me how to navigate all different kinds of situations.

What I wish was different

I wish I took more initiative instead of simply doing what I was told. Although, I had a penchant for being thorough and quick, I wish I had voiced my opinion more so that I could have possibly had a hand in the management. Our store relies on our visual and I wished that I had just gone for the opportunities given out that would have allowed me to develop the aesthetic.

Advice

It's hard grueling work, but it helps pay the bills. It was a good carrying over job before heading back to school. However, as an engineer student, I am looking for more technical internships for the summer. Retail is a great job for winter breaks though and I highly recommend it as it also helps to humble you and helps you develop conversational skills that will come in handy for interviews.
