Direct Support Professional

July 2019 • Mellenville, NY

What I liked

I continue to enjoy getting to know and understand individuals with disabilities. I enjoy teaching, singing, dancing, learning, cooking, and playing games with them. They constantly are making me smile and brightening my days. I am proud of myself for being able to help them when needed and learning about their behavior plans and emergency information. I like knowing I can make a difference every day in their lives.

What I wish was different

I wish the goal-setting system was different. For these individuals, we need specific, tangible, clear, and organized goals. Our goals are often vague and the individuals have the same goals in their plan for months or years. I also wish we could get our individuals more involved in their community (in a non-COVID-19 world). These individuals love meeting new people and learning new things, so getting involved can only increase that.

Advice

I have lots of advice but first and foremost: have patience and take it one day at a time. This job is both rewarding and challenging but that is how I learn and improve as a Direct Support Professional.
