CodeHS

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The engineering team at CodeHS was very supportive and taught me a lot. I liked that I worked on projects that involved colleagues from other teams (i.e. marketing) so that I could work closely with professionals in different fields and work on meaningful products. I loved that the work done at this company benefits younger students and can have an impact on their lives. My 2021 summer internship was hybrid, so it was nice to work in person and also have the flexibility of working from home. I came in without having extensive experience working on real-life, non-trivial projects so I was worried I wouldn't be able to contribute sufficiently, but I ended up learning tons and working on really cool things.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more project opportunities for collaboration between other interns. Consequently I wished there were slightly more intern spots for this reason. While it's valuable to work by yourself and with full-time engineers on projects for growth, I would have really enjoyed to work with the other interns on projects.

Advice

If you're shy, I strongly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and trying your best to connect with your coworkers as soon as possible. They are very friendly and will help you when you're stuck!

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Everything, honestly. I learned so many cool skills through this internship, and even when something daunted me at first, I was able to complete it -- I did so many projects I thought were beyond me. That's because everyone was so supportive and available when I needed to ask for help.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice if all the interns were in the same office, but there was still one other intern with me whom I made friends with!

Advice

Work at a startup... everyone is so nice and chill, and you really feel like an important part of the team.
