I liked being able to connect with the detectives. The unit is unique in that there are detectives from CSPD, EPSO, and the FBI. One detective from EPSO is also part time secret service. Learning from him was my favorite part of the internship. He would pull up old cases and show me the evidence to teach me how to think through everything. I also liked searching phones, social media, and jail calls because the information I found directly impacted real cases.
What I wish was different
I wish I saw more of the work the unit did outside of the office. Because I was only an intern I was pretty limited on what I was allowed to do outside of the office.
Advice
Don't be afraid to use the resources and connections you already have. The professional world is all about networking and that is how I landed this internship.
Also don't be afraid to ask questions. That is how you learn and that is what internships are for.
