Colorado State University- Cooperative Institute for Research In the Atmosphere (1375)

Summer Research Intern

May - August 2021 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

Valuable research and algorithm development experience. Research Mentor was incredibly kind, patient, and helpful. Set my own hours and worked from home.

What I wish was different

Slightly more clarity on my job description/ requirements.

Advice

Be prepared to work hard and learn a lot and have a lot of interesting work to do. It's fun but you have to be okay with failure and constant correction. It's a really great experience!

Research Intern

May - August 2020 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I loved having a personal mentor whom I was assigned to and could go to with questions as I helped her on her project. I also loved that my project mentor met me where I was at in regards to skill level and previous knowledge so I didnt feel as much "imposter syndrome" when the job started.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more to do. Many weeks I felt rather purposeless because I had finished all of my assigned tasks and was waiting for the next step to be completed so I could be useful again.

Advice

I would say be prepared to learn a lot of new terminology and to make flashcards to keep yourself up to date on all of the meteorology acronyms that come up, especially if you have never worked in this field before. Also be prepared to learn a lot and enjoy yourself. I think this was a great resource for me to get experience with research and working with people in a field that was foreign to me, so if you are considering applying as a research intern with CIRA, do it!
