Engineering Co-op

May - December 2021 • Pittsburg, CA

What I liked

I worked for two different departments during my time here; process automation and manufacturing services. The workplace culture in each was positive, flexible, and supportive. In process automation, I was able to learn more about plant automation, the electronics operating the plant, and the programming required for the plant to run safely and efficiently. In manufacturing services, I was able to learn more about the mechanical aspects of plants, specifically about valves, pumps, meters, and piping as well as the chemical process within my assigned plant.

Advice

Take the time you have during your co-op to learn as much as you work. Take plant tours, schedule informational interviews, and shadow people during their work, especially operators. This is the time to gain as much information about the field so that you have a more comprehensive idea as to which direction you want to go after graduation. Additionally, take the time to develop yourself as a professional by honing your soft skills such as time management, communication, and collaboration within the professional environment.

Production Engineer Co-Op

September - December 2021 • Pittsburg, CA

What I liked

Corteva is a great company with a very well ran Co-Op program. I was able to learn a lot over my two terms here thanks to the support I was given from my supervisors as well as the other employees I interacted with. The projects I was given were both meaningful and challenging and I felt comfortable asking questions to others in my work group. I also enjoyed living in working in the bay area. Corteva is a company that cares about there employees and wants to see them succeed which is something that I value in the companies that I work for.

Business Intelligence and Data Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Johnston, IA

What I liked

It was work that I had never undertaken before and it was definitely a new type of software I was working with.

What I wish was different

They didn't have a whole lot of work for me to do and I ran out of work quickly. There also wasn't a very good way to train myself in the skills I needed.

Advice

Always check your work before you send it up the chain to your supervisor and manager. Some of the time there were one or two simple programming mistakes that I could have gone back and revised if I took the time to do it.

R&D Intern

May - August 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

The atmosphere was very laid back yet academic. I could do research' and attend chemistry lectures as if I was in school, and also interact with people across the company in a wide variety of positions. There was also subsidized housing so I did not stress about looking for a place to stay.

What I wish was different

I wish I had talked to more people about graduate school. There were so many helpful people asking the interns if they were interested in graduate school and where they might go if they did; I should have taken full advantage of that now that I am in the middle of applying.

Advice

It is ok to be unsure about what you are doing; I had almost no background on my project yet by the end I had learned a lot and had an impressive collage of results. They were also very accommodating asking if there were other interests I wanted to pursue or try while there, and I got a little taste of everything.
