Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

Waitress

June - August 2022 • Knoxville, TN

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to serve people well and keep my mind active multi-tasking, juggling responsibilities, and working with a team. It was interesting and was always different every day depending on the customers and other servers I worked alongside.

What I wish was different

The workload was overwhelming at times due to being understaffed and being a new hire. I often had to wait on large parties or a large section all at one time which could be difficult. Often I would have to make salads, prepare food for presentation, seat my own tables, and serve customers all at once. I wish there was a better system set in place where we would be able to solely focus on serving diners because we aren't paid any more to do the rest.

Advice

I would say that this is a very strenuous job with many tasks to carry out at once, so the pressure can feel intense at times, but just try to take a breath and focus on doing the best you can to help your tables. You're only human, so don't take things that others say to heart in their impatience and without sympathy for the mental and physical demands of this job.

What I liked

I've served with Cracker Barrel since I turned 16. I genuinely love everything about my job. Being an outgoing, people-person has helped me relate to the guests that come in to eat. The management at this particular Cracker Barrel is also the best!

What I wish was different

Sometimes there was confusion with my schedule, but never anything major. Guests that came could sometimes be rude, but that's part of working in the service industry.

Advice

A super positive attitude not only helps with your mental health, but helps create a warm environment. (This often leads to more tips as well)
