What I liked

What I liked most about my internship with CRH was the fantastic team dynamic and the unwavering support from my mentors. The company's culture fostered a genuine and valuable work experience that truly stood out.

What I wish was different

In hindsight, if there's one thing I wish had been different about my internship experience, it would be the outcomes of some of the projects I worked on. Not all of them yielded the expected fruitful results. Additionally, having all the necessary software pre-installed on my laptop from the outset would have streamlined the workflow and allowed me to dive into tasks more efficiently.

Advice

One valuable piece of advice I'd like to share about this experience is the importance of constant communication, remaining open to new ideas, and actively implementing feedback. This approach not only fosters personal growth but also contributes to a more successful and collaborative work environment.

Construction Group Intern

What I liked

I worked two internships with Barriere and enjoyed every second of it. The day I walked in I could tell everyone was there to support me and help me learn as much as possible. My favorite part of the internship program is being part of a project management team and being able to work with experienced workers who have been in the industry for years.

What I wish was different

There is not much I would change about my experiences with Barriere. One thing is I wish I could have dove more into what goes into being a project manager rather than mainly field engineer tasks. But in my experience as an intern, I was able to learn out in the field and in the office.

Advice

My advice would be to dive in head first and ask questions. Everyone at Barriere is willing to help you so ask questions and learn as much as possible. Also be willing to travel and put 100% effort in your work, while keeping job sites safe.

Construction Intern

What I liked

I worked for Barriere, and I truly loved the people and culture. Every step of the way, I was supported by everyone from field engineers to the president of the company. Safety is prioritized above all else, so I never felt nervous going into a day of work or going out into the field because I know the company I worked for was working to keep me safe.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more direction at the beginning of my internship at Barriere. For my first couple weeks, I felt a bit lost and confused about what was expected of me day-by-day.

Advice

Communicate as much as possible with your Project Manager, and create friendships with as many people as you come in contact with. Connections and relationships make your daily job so much more enjoyable.

Operations Management Intern

What I liked

I liked being given autonomy and independence to solve problems on my own.

What I wish was different

I wish my plant was closer to my house. I had to drive 45 minutes to work to be there by 5am.

Advice

Working hard pays off. Everyday I came home from work tired and sweaty and it felt great. I would have to say that the most important thing you can do is have a good mentor to teach you the lessons required to do the job.

What I liked

The atmosphere at Barriere was fantastic. Everyone who worked there was very knowledgeable and willing to teach me what I did not understand. No one there, from the field engineers to the CEO, made you feel like you were stupid.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more field exposure along with my office experience. It was an issue of my jobsite's location, rather than anything else. The jobsite I was assigned to got flooded out about halfway through the internship.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something. No one automatically knows everything.

Field Engineer Intern

What I liked

I was able to learn the upper management side of the company. For the two previous summers of 2017 and 2018, I worked on a crew as a laborer. Getting to see the management side of things really made me appreciate what I am going to school for!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have spent more time there, in fact, I didn't want the summer to end.

Advice

I advise to be sure and ask questions to anyone you work with. If you don't know something, then there is no reason why you shouldn't want to know it, so ask questions.

Safety Intern

What I liked

Interning with Barriere during the summer of 2019 was my first safety internship. Being from Murray, Kentucky, my family and I were very nervous about everything that comes with moving across the country. People at Barriere made sure I was safe, comfortable, and got my times worth out of moving for the summer. My summer was packed with field experience, training, and educational steps towards improving my future career in safety. Barriere is very serious about their safety being a core value. Many companies will say this and not implement safety programs towards achieving a safety culture. I was able to see how Barriere has tailored their safety programs for their employees. They provided instruction in a classroom setting and then applied that knowledge to the field. They encourage questions and for employees to share their opinions. I definitely learned a lot of applicable knowledge to bring back to Murray State.

What I wish was different

One thing that could improve this intern program, is to have more time with the other interns during the summer.

Advice

For anyone who interns with Barriere, no matter your experience or position, ask questions. I was never judged for any question I had. I also would advise constant communication with your supervisor. If you want to know more about a certain aspect of the company, do not be afraid to ask!

Field Engineer Intern

What I liked

The best part of Barriere has to be the working atmosphere. I worked on a project with Barriere located within my home town and was able to work alongside the Management Team. With this Management Team, I was able to see how the project was run whether it was the smallest or largest detail it was very interesting and informative to see. I was able to see all aspects of the company and meet many different people.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask a ton of questions even if it may seem like a dumb question ask it anyway, and be a sponge and soak up as much information you can.

Safety Intern

What I liked

I was thrilled to be learning more every day. I was working with very talented people and great teacher, and I know that I wouldn’t have gotten as much experience as I have already if I were to be in a bigger company where interns may not get the chance to be as hands-on as I have been able to. This internship has given me even more real-world experience than I had before this experience. It has also given me the chance to learn more about Safety and how its been applied to real world which is a lot different from what I learnt in the classroom.

Advice

I would encourage to ask questions and understand how the company works, everyone there are willing to explain things to you. They are all great teachers and ready to help you learn as much as you can.

What I liked

Full-time. Benefits. Higher starting salary than most others. Generally flexible schedule, as long as the work gets done. Great manager. Interesting work. Lots of opportunities.

What I wish was different

There is enough required work to do at times that there can be little time for anything else; this job becomes a high priority, and high-stakes work and dependencies are based off of it.

Advice

Get into construction or a trade of some sort (equipment operator, welder, electrician, etc). The construction industry, especially heavy civil, isn’t going anywhere. The general shift of potential employees toward other industries (i.e. computer technology and business) means there is a big labor shortage, making the demand (and the potential pay) quite high.
