Mechanical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

Very through introduction into automotive engineering. Through my position with DENSO in the AC compressor group I was introduced to application, testing, and design of the automotive compressor. Very hands on training on internal components of compressor, ac system as a whole, and how vehicle testing is conducted. Overall this was a great experience that has allowed me to succeed at DENSO and continue in automotive engineering.

What I wish was different

An opportunity to explore multiple automotive products within DENSO through a rotational program.

Advice

A position at DENSO can be whatever you want it to be. As a co-op you are given real engineering responsibility.

Sales Co-op

April 2016 - November 2018 • Dublin, OH

What I liked

I received a fast understanding of how a true good business ran. The pay was very good and everyone was helpful, it was a very enjoyable experience.

What I wish was different

N/a. It is a fast paced industry and getting things done on time is very important so if you can not handle deadlines well this would not be for you. Takes a little bit of time to learn the industry and all the parts and how things work.

Advice

This was a great opportunity with a great company.

Sales Intern

October 2017 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

I get real experience in my field. I am able to work full time and get paid for the work I do. I work in a fast paced environment that gives me real time experience that I can use to help me get employed once I graduate.

What I wish was different

I wish we were allowed to work overtime. I pay for my own school, so the extra money would be nice (and help me get more work done!)

Advice

Always be open to new opportunities. No matter what happens, it will be beneficial. If you don’t like it, then you know what to avoid in the future. If you do like it, you can use it as leverage and experience towards your career.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

October 2017 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

Got very good experience in an office environment. I had he opportunity to rotate groups at the end of the summer which is very good because I am now working on design work (I was in an application group before). People are very nice and I made $20.95/hr (senior pay) which is pretty good. Also the only dress code is no shorts, so it is an extremely casual environment.

What I wish was different

My first group was not great, they didn’t have much for me to do. It seems very hit or miss with which group you get into, but still an overall positive experience. I imagine you would run into this problem just about anywhere.

Advice

If you get a group and they don’t have much for you to do, find something to work on that’s not surfing the internet. I improved my programming in vba with my free time and ended up using that skill for some tasks down the road (they liked that).

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

The best part of the internship was that I was directly working with a team in an important project, as opposed to doing an intern project working with only with other interns.

What I wish was different

It may have been a little better if there was maybe a week of initial training as opposed to being thrown into the project, right away. However, being forced into the situation may have helped with the learning process better.

Advice

I would advise interns to be open minded as well as forthcoming in their internship experiences, as I think that it helped me and others gain more opportunities.
