DePauw University

Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Greencastle, IN

What I liked

I loved working with a professor on a project he was very passionate about. It was also great getting to experience the sort of work that faculty to do outside of the classroom.

What I wish was different

Advice

I think students should take advantage of the small classroom sizes at DePauw and connect with their faculty. I would not have gotten this job if I had not been in contact with my professor outside class about career interests.

Chemistry Research Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed he real world experienced that I gained from working in a laboratory enviornment. The specific work skills that I gained from interacting in such a professional and science driven environment were immessurable

What I wish was different

I wish the research team that we had was a little smaller, that way I could have had a little more one on one time with the professor overseeing the research.

Advice

Applying yourself to a serious summer research project, whether it be at DePauw or any other internship, is one of the most gratifying and rewarding experiences I have had in my academic career. I highly suggest it to anyone who is considering a career in any of the STEM fields.

What I liked

While I have not had a whole summer break of coding experience, it was great to experience developing applications for needs in the real world. I enjoyed the challenging problems I encountered to develop a Japanese recognition algorithm. I felt accomplished when the application was launched on AppStore.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2017 • Greencastle, IN

What I liked

It was so incredible to get to be in a lab setting everyday for 8 hours rather than the typical 3 hours you would get for a class period during the school year. That extra time in the lab really allowed me to immerse myself in the lab and allowed me to think outside the box and come up with my own ideas on how to research. It was also a great opportunity to get to work one-on-one with a professor in more of a professional setting. The professor that I researched with is now a great resource for me in searching for future internships! I also received funding through Eli Lilly to do my summer research and had the opportunity to present my poster in front of the chemists at Lilly as well as in front of the American Chemical Society at the national meeting in New Orleans!

What I wish was different

I really don't have any complaints! I had a great experience doing research on campus over the summer. I highly recommend it!

Advice

Doing research on campus is such a great opportunity because it allows you to gain experience with research while still in a comfortable setting on campus that can truly set you up for great success when hunting for jobs off-campus in the future. It also allows you to network with not only your professor but also the other student researchers in your lab.
