What I liked
Deseret News gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in video production. I was given creative freedom on many projects and was tasked with creating my own video.
Deseret News gave me a brand new MacBook Pro to use at work and home, often bought lunch for the whole office, gave me a Frontrunner pass so I could travel in and out of Salt Lake for free and really respected me in my position and skills. On top of that, I was paid. Most internship offers I had were unpaid.
The environment was very friendly and I felt like they tried to develop me and prepare me for a full time position following graduation.
My time with Deseret News was short (only 7 weeks) but I feel that this is a company I want to work for straight out of college.
What I wish was different
I just wish my time at Deseret a News was longer. There was not much else I would’ve changed.
Advice
Work hard. Show your skill set. Take time to learn all that you can. The video team is small but the company is investing in growing the team and developing interns into full time employees.

Don't be afraid to look for opportunities outside tradition. I'm a physics major, but I interned at as a writer at a news organization! I had some skills they were looking for: research skills, analytical thinking. It's about marketing the skills you have, not just your major. I learned a lot from this experience that I never would have from my coursework.
