Desert Research Institute

Research Intern

May - August 2021 • Las Vegas, NV

What I liked

The main takeaway was that I got to experience my top fields of interest in a more in-depth perspective, that being the medical and science fields. I enjoyed being able to form professional relationships with individuals that have given me more networking opportunities outside of the internship as well. Furthermore, I enjoyed being able to do something that gets my name out there, especially in such a challenging field of work. Overall, I have gained and strengthen my skill set, which further prepares me for future things that I’ll be a part of.

Student Intern

May - August 2019 • Las Vegas, NV

What I liked

The school started off with a class meeting for all the interns on the job location, which helped us feel a bit of companionship before we took the big dive in.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. As an internship, they are there to help you learn. And definitely introduce yourself to everyone! It’s a great networking opportunity.

Environmental microbiology research

June 2019 • Las Vegas, NV

What I liked

Everyone I work with was super friendly and did their best to make sure I understood every lab procedure both stepwise and the significance of those processes. It also gave me lab experience and made me appreciate microbes so much more.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more hours.

Advice

If you are starting out in the lab-you're going to be pushed out of your comfort zone. You will be challenged in some way or another, but you can do it. I had some pretty complex lab procedures and I was able to get through them, despite me being worried that I would mess up.
