What I liked

Working with children, teaching them new and innovative science experiments and vocabulary, seeing their eyes light up when they learned something new

What I wish was different

I don't have anything I would really change. It was a pretty good summer job!

Advice

Always be on your toes. Especially working with kids, you never know when a lesson plan changes or something happens you didn't expect. Being flexible is a must!

What I liked

The company is so flexible with Summer schedule, you're able to pick what weeks you decide to work with the option of working at various locations close to where you live. The lesson plans for this camp are very thorough while still maintaining that "fun" environment. Management is always so accessible to their employees.

What I wish was different

Promoting the camp more, so more kids and especially more girls can sign up and realize that science can be very fun!

Advice

The more creative, animated the more fun you will have. So lessons might not go your way but make the most out of it with the kids.

Science Camp Teacher

June - August 2018 • Thousand Oaks, CA

What I liked

It was a great experience learning how to develop the patience to work with young kids and teach them complicated science topics like Newton's laws and electromagnetism through fun experiments. The staff was amazing and the job was definitely a good challenge.

What I wish was different

Some of the lesson plans could have been better organized so I did not have to adapt quite as much in the moment, and some topics were just too difficult for the kids to understand.

Advice

Have patience and read up on your lesson plans a few days before teaching them.

What I liked

Working with kids, the job was close to home.

What I wish was different

The curriculum is very classroom based, and doesn't allow for much exploration of phenomena by students. There is not much time to set classroom norms because of the highly regulated schedule, which leaves teachers scrambling with classroom management later in the week.

Advice

This is good if you know you want to teach elementary school students! But it is definitely more like school than camp, so if you're looking for a camp setting, try some where else.

Teacher

June - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I liked working with kids, and I liked sharing my scientific knowledge with them

What I wish was different

The support for the teachers were sub par, and the locations weren't always conducive to learning

Advice

Take what you get, and make the most of it.
