Marketing and Communications Intern

June - August 2019 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

DFS was an atmosphere that fostered growth and learning. They value their interns so much and let them take on projects head on. They teach you skills and then let you try them out for yourself. We worked on a project that lasted the entire 8 weeks that showed us start to finish how to gain a client for your business and how to create a business model. DFS truly cares about what their interns get out of their time their and they are so open to answering questions, letting you work on high level profiles, and letting you test out new skills. We worked on everything from website design to editing proposals, to crating social media content, to making videos. It truly was incredible and we did so much! our supervisor and boss met with us regularly to make sure we were doing the right thing and doing what we wanted to be doing. If we expressed interest in a certain area they would make it a point to let us work on projects in that area. They listened and they cared.

What I wish was different

nothing. I wish it had been longer. I really wouldn't have changed a thing

Advice

I would say do not let fear keep you from doing this. I was scared that I wouldn't be as helpful or as useful as other interns because I had no experience in this field beforehand. I didn't know if this is what I wanted to be doing and I didn't know if I would be good at it. I was wrong. and I am so glad I did not let my fear of failure keep me from trying. I learned SO much personally and professionally and now I know without a doubt that this is the field I want to go into. and to my surprise I was good at things and it didn't matter that I didn't have as much experience because DFS cared so much about letting me learn and letting me grow. Now I have the experience and then some.

Advice

This internship allowed me to have a highly engaged, hands-on experience in the world of marketing and pr. It is a small woman owned and run company, and the small environment provided a better opportunity to receive one-on-one training and mentorship. There were two other interns on the team with me, which made accomplishing tasks easier and also allowed for us to learn how to collaborate and learn from each other. I would advise to try and find internships where you can gain hands-on experience and meaningful mentorships.
