Earlham College - Joseph Moore Museum

Outreach and Animal Caretaker

August 2021 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

The Joseph Moore Museum is a really positive environment to learn and grow. They accept people of all majors and help you to gain connections and learn how to function in a working environment. Overall, they are flexible and kind employers.

What I wish was different

The pay is not always ideal, however the flexibility more than makes up for it.

Advice

If you want more hours, put yourself out there. There is always things to be done and the more you advocate for yourself the more you will be able to do.

Outreach

August 2021 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

The museum provides a wonderful sense of community, and it is a very forgiving and welcoming position. The bosses there are very supportive, and they understand if struggles with schoolwork interfere with your shifts. It's a great learning ground for a lot of future careers but also good for gaining experience for anything life may throw your way.

What I wish was different

The pay isn't great. There isn't much the bosses can do about it and they have tried to raise it higher but it has been unsuccessful as of right now.

Advice

Engage with your coworkers as much as you can! The Joseph Moore Museum's sense of community is incredible, and the more you talk the more you can get involved.

Outreach Intern

May - August 2019 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

I work at Joseph Moore Museum during the academic year, but this internship gave me the opportunity to explore the organization more fully.

What I wish was different

It was a lot of work! There were only 2 students hired as interns, and we were working at or near 30 hours per week for the entire summer.

Advice

While I didn't leave Richmond or Earlham this summer, the experience I had working on campus gave me connections that have bettered my work here during the school year and will continue to grow in my final semesters. You don't always have to go big during the summers to get the most out of them!

Museum Guide

May 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

The Joseph Moore Museum is a fantastic place to work. It allows workers to make decisions independently and opens them up to a multitude of new experiences such as customer service, animal care, and a deeper exploration of the collections.

What I wish was different

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but there are low staff numbers over the summer so it is a very intense time dedication.

Advice

Be open to things that may have initially made you uncomfortable! The museum would never force an employee to do something they did not want to; however, you will surprise yourself with your abilities and comfortability in seemingly uncomfortable situations (I love the cockroach!)
