I enjoyed observing and analyzing the well-oiled machine of the organization. I enjoyed working with children and interacting with my co-workers. I loved the East Harlem community and learning more about its history.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to do more. However, it seemed like distance was the nature of my position. Maybe I should have looked for something that was a bit more interactive more consistently.
Advice
When volunteering, take initiative to ask questions and take notes. Although you are not getting paid, you can receive concrete dividends from experience and learning. Aim to grow during these experiences.
