Intern Case Management

September 2017 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

What I love about my internship is my supervisor took me under her wing; I shadowed her through various appointments, she introduced me to the team and the other staff members in the Case Management Department and I am given a weekly personal one-on-one training about the agency and how things work. I was later introduced to other staff members of the agency and I was able to learn about each department of the organization. I enjoyed taking a tour of the Oakland County Jail (which I’ve never seen before!) and touring their Clubhouse in Royal Oak.

What I wish was different

I didn’t like that my ID badge was taking a long time to process. Once I got my badge, it wasn’t working properly, so I would have to call my supervisor or on of my team members to let me inside the building. But once the beginning stage went by (my first four weeks) things begin to take off.

Advice

A few things I would share with a future intern is learn as much as you can while you’re there. Take full advantage of the fact that you are an intern. Ask questions if you don’t understand and if someone is talking too fast ask them to slow down a bit or repeat it. Don’t be afraid to speak up, and don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor that you want to get more involved because this is your experience, so make it count!
