What I liked

This job allowed me to enter another culture. I was providing respite care for people, and I never thought that would be something I would do. I liked the relationships I built with me campers and the experiences that I was allowed to have.

What I wish was different

The camp site was not good. We rent the camp from the boy scouts in the area so it is not accessible to those in chairs. While we are in the process of looking for new campgrounds or updating the one we have, the current camp does not provide the best experience for everyone.

Advice

DO THIS! Working here was something I wish I had know about sooner. I am going back for a second year and look forward to it everyday. This is more than just a respite care job, all majors make sense working these kinds of jobs. Any interest in education, Psychology, Sociology, Biology, or any other major would be perfect for working at this camp. The relationships that you build being the main provider for one or two campers a week are some that you will bring with you for the rest of your life.

What I liked

I grew a lot as a person working at Camp Easterseals. It helped me become the adult I have always wanted to be.

What I wish was different

The job was hard- I am not going to lie. I wish I had more time off during a week- I would be there Sunday- Friday without leaving, often working all day and night straight.

Advice

It takes a certain type of person to do this job. You have to be very mentally strong. It will change your life for the better if you do it!

The staff was incredible to work with and we had so much fun!

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to get the training week schedule before I showed up to training week.

Advice

Even if you don’t think you have enough experience for this job, all you have to do is care enough and you will learn your role pretty quickly. Take a chance and give it a shot!
