About Emmaus Homes

OUR MISSION: Compelled by faith in Jesus Christ, we enrich the lives of individuals of all beliefs, with cognitive or developmental disabilities, by fostering independence, inclusion, and self-advocacy.

At Emmaus Homes, we know that the people we support want to be independent. In order to do that, they need a home and a community that embraces their unique abilities. The problem is it’s hard to live without support, which makes our clients feel frustrated, excluded, and powerless. We believe everyone deserves the resources needed to live independently. We understand it’s tough to manage life alone, which is why for 125 years, as a faith-based organization, we have provided high-quality service caring for the whole person for their whole life.

It is the responsibility of Emmaus and Direct Support Professionals to help our clients to learn, grow, develop and reach their individualized goals. We help with “Activities of Daily Living”, but what we do goes so far beyond that. For example, we help individuals care for their own room, house and yard. We help them with learning volunteer skills, accessing the community, shopping, money and employment. It is about independence and helping each person reach their full potential and quality of life.

Everyone contributes. Whether it’s cooking, planning the day, washing dishes, sweeping, dusting, etc… in whatever way you can. All individuals have their own room with the opportunity to decorate and set up the room as they wish. We teach people that this is their home and it is their responsibility to help to care for it. It is Emmaus’ job to support them in doing as much as they can for themselves.

Becoming a DSP is a great opportunity if you enjoy working in Direct Care, Community or Group Home settings as a Caregiver, Home Health Aide, Personal Care Assistant (PCA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Occupational Therapy (OT) Assistant and is also a great way to gain experience if you are currently a student in a Health or Social services field.

“I loved working with clients to assist them with their daily needs. We made each person feel like their own individual. Though they had cognitive or developmental disabilities, they continue to gain independence, inclusion and self-advocacy. ”
