My colleagues sought to challenge and engage me from day 1. I have developed many skills applicable to more than just this internship. My colleagues were all very intelligent and willing to share knowledge with me at any time. This experience has been very valuable to me. The benefits Fannie Mae offers are a big plus as well. We had many guest executive speaker events for only interns as well as other intern activities such as going to a Nationals baseball game.

What I liked

I really appreciated the fact that my team trusted in my abilities to complete the tasks at hand. Human Resources Intern

June 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The employees at Fannie Mae are extremely supportive and allow you to make the internship what you want it to be. I was nervous when the internship was moved online because of COVID-19, but it has exceeded my expectations. The team assigns me meaningful projects, values my opinion, and provides me with opportunities to explore things I am interested in. I especially enjoy the executive speaker series where the interns get to hear from top management in the company.

What I wish was different

I wish this internship could have been in person and longer. I have learned so much in the short 6 weeks and would have loved to be even more hands on.

Advice

Make the most out of it. Every person that I have reached out to has been more than happy to chat for 30 minutes and tell me about their experience at Fannie Mae. Every meeting and person I have talked to has provided me with something new, whether it was advice about someone to talk to, more knowledge about Fannie Mae, or a fun conversation. Don't be scared to make connections.

Business Operations Intern

June - July 2020 • Plano, TX

What I liked

I had such an amazing experience interning for Fannie Mae this summer! Even though everything was online, I still connected with my team and did meaningful work for them. Everyone I met in the company was very kind, more than willing to talk to me about their experiences, and full of wisdom and advice for my next steps as a college senior. Even though I was only there for 6 weeks, I really did feel like a part of Fannie Mae throughout my time there.

What I wish was different

Obviously, I wish I could have had my internship in person, but with everything going on in the world, I’m just lucky I still had a job to get experience at.

Advice

Networking is key!! One of the reasons I enjoyed my internship experience so much was that I was proactive in setting up time with my team members and reaching out to organizations in the company I was interested in learning about and setting up time with people there.

Human Resources Intern

June - July 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The organization truly fosters a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment. Even virtually, everyone is so friendly and went out of their way to make me feel like I am a member of the team. They encouraged me to ask questions and engage with as many people as I could. I was also offered many opportunities to contribute my skills and knowledge within my team. I would recommend interning with Fannie Mae to anyone looking to learn, grow, and develop skills that will benefit your future endeavors.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to connect with other interns in my cohort. It was hard to meet other interns in a virtual environment. Other than that, my experience was great and one that I will forever be grateful for.

Advice

Try to connect and network with as many people as you can. These connections can be meaningful in your future endeavors. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions. There are so many smart and talented employees within the organization who are always willing to answer any questions you may have.
