Far Corners Community Musical Theatre

Assistant Director

June - August 2019 • Puntarenas, Puntarenas Province

What I liked

I loved the people and community aspect. This is common for theatre but the backgrounds of each person that comes into this program is so different and you find ways to connect with each one of them that you wouldn't expect. It really opens your eyes.

What I wish was different

Advice

It really is all about what you put in. It is incredibly challenging but just as if not more rewarding. Seeing how much you mean to the children and the community is what makes it all worth it. My biggest advice is to really get to know the kids. Also, to be open and ready for whatever is thrown at you and be ready and able to adjust when necessary.

Props and Set Designer

June - July 2019 • Puntarenas, Puntarenas Province

What I liked

I loved being able to watch the kids that we worked with as they grew and got more confident with theater.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had had more opportunities to connect with and get to know the kids, as my job was all backstage.

Advice

I approached working with Far Corners as a volunteer experience on top of a separate internship with another organization, and I soon realized how much of a time commitment I had made and how fulfilling the work I was doing with Far Corners was. I loved working with Far Corners and wanted to put in as much time as I possibly could with them, but I think it is important to know that this is a full time commitment, and the work that comes of it is extremely rewarding.

Costume Designer

August 2019 • Curridabat, San José Province

What I liked

The kids really all come from different perspectives and it is quite amazing how they are able to come together and make this play possible.

What I wish was different

As long as you are prepared to give it your all and are passionate with musical theater you will be very well prepared with experience. I would also like to emphasize to be prepared to take initiative and be prepared in you work when taking this internship into consideration.

Advice

This internship is not for the faint heart-ed it helps you solve problems that one may not need to solve in an every other day theater. Anyone that is considering this internship be prepared to bring your all and really be sure about being proactive. You will be working outside your field at times as I helped with sets with no background in set construction and talk to the locals about scheduling or other materials need for the musical. As long as you are up to challenges and experiencing new things this may be a good internship for you. Also, with the stay home family communication is key and be okay with being wrong when speaking, as Spanish may not be your first language. They do usually have one member of the family that can speak English fairly well. This was a very challenging internship for me but I would not trade this experience for the world as I have learned so many new things as well as have made so many new friends not just in Costa Rica but others who have also done this internship with me at the time. Definitely not a Psychology base internship just a fun experience that I wanted to have but amazing internship for any theater majors
