Fellowes Brands

Design Engineer

October 2018 • Schaumburg, IL

What I liked

I like that my thoughts and opinions are valued by my coworkers, that my work is varied and challenging and very fast-paced, that I get to see products on which I have worked "in the wild", and that I work in a very respectful office environment.

What I wish was different

Having started only two months ago, not much. Maybe that I had made a career move sooner.

Advice

I finished grad school and got this job. I am pretty sure this is not the sort of position that this survey is meant for but it did ask for my most recent job and I intend to be honest.

Graphic Design Intern

July 2018 • Itasca, IL

What I liked

This internship has been an all-around amazing opportunity as a Graphic Design major. As an intern, I am treated no differently than the full-time designers, and have been able to work on important company projects such as new brand logos and trade show installations. Since Fellowes Brands does almost all of their creative work (including lifestyle photography, video, printing, and more) in-house, I have been able to get the full scope on a designer's role within an organization. It has been incredibly rewarding to work with a full design team, including a creative director, and project managers who communicate between designers and business teams. It has helped me learn to manage my working time more efficiently, communicate concisely, and how to be an important asset to an employer. I am beyond grateful and excited for this experience!

What I wish was different

The only down-side to this opportunity is the commute-- an hour+ drive from Chicago depending on traffic!

Advice

My advice would be to network and learn as much from other professionals (even if they aren't in your field) as possible. A positive attitude and willingness to learn new things will go far and people will remember you!
