Economic Research Assistant

April - August 2023 • Claremont, CA

What I liked

I liked the applicability of the research and analysis that I conducted. Apart from this, I felt that there was freedom to work on my own schedule so the experience was very much results driven.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more consistent communications with my professor.

Advice

Be prepared to explore unfamiliar concepts by yourself! Oftentimes your professor will be very busy and won't be able to reply to your questions immediately.

Summer Research Analyst

May - August 2019 • Claremont, CA

What I liked

I really liked working 1-on-1 with a Professor here at CMC. As somebody who has been an intern at a startup before, conducting research as an assistant to a Professor is a very different pace. All of your work is dedicated to one individual which is really amazing to see. As an undergraduate student, it is very rare to have a research experience with a professor. I was essentially tasked with reading and reviewing current literature pertaining to my professor's research topic, so I was basically being paid to read and learn. I understood what academia was like and I was introduced to financial economics, albeit in an academic setting, with this experience.

What I wish was different

I wish my project would have been more based on quantitative research. Beyond this aspect, I don't have many complaints.

Advice

However minuscule a task may seem, Professors conducting research are incredibly busy. The amount of work that you can get done genuinely helps the Professor a lot. In the end, your role is to be an assistant to your Professor so absorb as much knowledge as you can from who you are working with while completing everything requested.
