Municipal engineering intern

May - August 2023 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

The people at the office were great! I learned a lot, and everybody was always willing to answer my questions. My boss was a great teacher and loved to talk about anything civil engineering related. I was able to get both field and office experience (Cad and bid-related), which was very helpful as I am learning what I like and don't like.

What I wish was different

I had a lot of down time where I did not have work, and my boss did not have work for me to do, and I did not have a set weekly workload, so every time I finished with something, I had to ask my boss what to do next because I did not have work lined up.

Advice

If there's an experience you want but aren't getting (such as going to into the field more, or learning more CAD), bring it up. If your boss doesn't know you want to do/experience something because you have not told them, they have no way of remedying the problem they did not know existed.

Civil Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Grand Blanc, MI

What I liked

All of the coworkers I had were very helpful and understood I am still very new to the job. They always answered my questions no matter how small and insignificant they may have been. My supervisor Lisa Easterwood was incredibly good at teaching me the ropes and helping with my understanding about what a Civil Engineers daily job looks like. The workload was good, challenging but reasonable, and helped further my understanding of my future career. Also got lots of exposure to many different fields of study and types of jobs and never felt like just the intern who gets coffee, etc.

What I wish was different

Nothing comes to mind that was significant. Some work experiences of different areas were not the best but mostly because of personal preference and learning I do not want to work in said area as a discipline for Civil Engineering.

Advice

Be prepared to work and ask for help if you are confused because not asking can lead to worse results than asking.
