Flint Hills Resources/Koch Industries

Accountant Intern

May - August 2022 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

The way the company was run and the people that I met.

What I wish was different

The onboarding process was a little rough.

Advice

Hard skills are not as important as you might think! It is way more important to focus on who you are as a person and how well you communicate with/treat others.

Software Developer Analyst Intern

May - August 2021 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Loved meeting new people and learning new skills. The projects were relevant and pushed me to learn, and I always had plenty of resources for solving problems I encountered. I felt like the company wanted to invest in me.

What I wish was different

The experience can vary quite a bit depending on supervisor, team, role, etc. While I had an awesome team and job, it would have been nice to have more input/visibility previous to the start of the internship on what the experience would look like.

Advice

Take advantage of the network and experience! There are so many companies and people you gain access to as an intern here, so learn as much as you can!

Business Systems Analyst

May - August 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I loved the companies focus on me reaching my highest potential. Koch Industries is a very foward thinking company and is actively investing in the future. They seek to create virtuous cycles of mutual benefit with preferred partners. I learned a lot during such a short amount of time because of the numerous opportunities that pushed me to learn and grow. The internship is a phenomenoal program that speaks volumns about Koch Industries.

What I wish was different

The opportunity to explore different types of work and position over the course of the summer.

Advice

Work hard, ask questions good questions and be happy.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

The internship at Koch Industries included almost 200 interns, creating many networking opportunities. The company's guiding principles also help to structure day-to-day work/life decisions and make for a comfortable work environment.

What I wish was different

Koch's employee positions are very horizontally aligned, which means that it is difficult to advance in positions. You may receive added responsibilities now and then, but your overall role won't really change unless you "quit" that position and "get hired" in a new position, possibly even in a new company under the Koch Industries umbrella. Also, the work given was not intellectually stimulating or challenging.

Advice

Make sure that you apply for an internship in a specific area that you are interested in. If you want to work in tax, say that you are interested in a tax internship. If you don't want to work in accounts payable, make that known.

Plant Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Shell Rock, IA

What I liked

I liked how Interesting the whole process was. I worked at an ethanol plant and the entire process fascinated me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more guidance from mentors and coworkers. I was not given a lot of direction.

Advice

Part of the reason I took this job was because it was away from home. I wanted to see if I'd like that. (I didn't.) It's just as important to find out what kind of career you're NOT interested in as it is to find out what you ARE interested in. This includes job responsibilities, location, work culture, and more.
