Fordham University Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs

Communications Intern

June - August 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

I loved the hands-on guidance of my supervisor. The skills I learned are in social media and Canva design. This experience has opened my eyes to the possibility of a career in humanitarian work. The team at the IIHA is phenomenal and inspiring.

What I wish was different

There had been a little more cohesion with the work provided to the interns. We did not have an overarching group project or goal as a group of interns.

Advice

I would advise a future intern to network and take advantage of all this position's opportunities. The internship is what you make of it, so take initiative, be curious and thoughtful.

Communications Intern

March - May 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

I felt very encouraged to work on my own ideas and always felt like my feedback was appreciated. Very supportive staff, and a workplace that changes everyday due to the dynamic environment of running the social media accounts for an institute with a variety of events, products, and initiatives. Also lots of networking opportunities are provided.

What I wish was different

The only thing I could think of would be an expanded role past the social media responsibilities. For those looking for a career in social media, this shouldn't be a problem at all.

Advice

Take advantage of everything that is offered during your time interning at the office. The IIHA is a very established player in the NYC International Relations / Non-Profit world, and there are a lot of fantastic networking opportunities that can come out of this role. Brendan and Lily are both fantastic supervisors who are more than happy to help you, not to mention well connected. If there is any down time at the office, use that to think of new ideas for how to help the IIHA. It's really fun to contribute to their mission, so don't just do the internship for the line on the CV.

Marketing and Communications Intern

September - December 2020 • Bronxville, NY

What I liked

It's such a friendly environment to work in and very one on one. I've had the chance to get to know my supervisor amidst the pandemic and I've gained better proficiency using digital technology and social media.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person! But this was due to COVID.

Advice

Your internship is what you make of it! Take advantage of every opportunity and offer your services. If you can't - express your enthusiasm to learn.
