I got to wear many hats at French Woods from teaching private lessons to music directing entire productions; I enjoyed the challenge and variety. I also thrived in the relative independence of this work environment, as I had autonomy in running my lessons and my rehearsals with the kids. Beyond the teaching work, I loved that I was encouraged to not only care for, but genuinely bond with the children. This is truly a place to form lifelong bonds and learn what it is to be a mentor.
What I wish was different
The two-week stretches between days off can be challenging.
Advice
I would advise any new employee that they should prepared to be extremely flexible in how their role will look, because it is difficult to know before beginning this job exactly what will be happening hour by hour, day by day. If you are comfortable with flexibility and learning on the job, though, work at French Woods can be extremely rewarding.

Assistant Director and Counselor
June - August 2019 • Hancock, NY
What I liked
Working in a relevant field to my education. Getting the chance to teach kids and teenagers about theater, performance, and working together to put on a quality work of drama.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been slightly closer to a normal work week. That might not be possible with the nature of the work that needs to be done, but the long stretches between days off can become rather challenging.
Advice
Come in with a clear idea of your job and what you need to accomplish. This can be a great resume booster if you play it right, but you can also get a little burned out after a few weeks if you overcommit yourself.

Horseback riding department head
May - September 2019 • Hancock, NY
What I liked
I loved teaching children ages 4-17 years old horseback riding. I also really liked running the overall program. I was responsible for 33 horses, 14 staff, and over one hundred campers each day. I really enjoyed the management skills. I also really enjoyed working with my staff from England, Australia, Lithuania, Scotland, and Ireland.
What I wish was different
That I started working there earlier in May, as I enjoyed it so much.
Advice
I highly recommend any college student work at a summer camp for one summer. It doesn’t have to be French woods, but any good reputable camp is an amazing experience to work at. It has made so many new connections for me!
