Hackensack Meridian Health

Patient Care Technician

May 2020 • Perth Amboy, NJ

What I liked

I really loved getting experience in patient care as a sophomore! I got to float between different floors and took care of everything from pediatric psychology patients in the Emergency Room to critical care patients in the Special Care Unit. The nurses and other techs were super friendly and willing to teach you things, and I really felt like I was making a difference in the community.

What I wish was different

I felt really overwhelmed taking care of COVID-19 patients right off the bat, so I wish that there had been a bit more included about COVID-19 in our week-long education session prior to starting the job. I also would have liked getting placed with a preceptor for a longer period of time, as the orientation period for nursing students was only 3 days.

Advice

I would definitely suggest to apply as a floating PCT for your first job, I got experience with so many different patient populations and it really helped me to learn what I liked and what I didn't like. Try to get into as many patient rooms as you can, because as a tech you have the freedom to assist with pretty much anything happening on the floor (obviously make sure that your patient assignment is taken care of first). I also suggest becoming friendly with your colleagues- there's a lot of times when you just need an extra set of hands or someone to review a procedure with you and it's a lot easier to ask someone for help when you have a good relationship with them.

Marketing and Communications Intern

June - August 2019 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

The company culture at HMH thrives off of creativity, collaboration, courageousness, and compassion; all qualities necessary in healthcare and empowering employees. As an intern, I was encouraged to take on challenges, express my creativity, and really get to know the Marketing and Communications teams and leaders. Building bonds with other employees helped me gain a deep understanding of HMH's work throughout New Jersey and improve the quality of my own work for the HealthU brand.

What I wish was different

The summer internship program has scheduled workshops for interns throughout the 10-week internship, but attendance was quite low. While this isn't necessarily HMH's fault, it is something that should be kept in mind for semesters to come when figuring out incentives to grow attendance.

Advice

Network with as many people as possible! Everyone is very friendly and have great knowledge to offer about the healthcare field, communications in general, and creativity. Being that the network is so large, making a connection in one location is helpful for seeking employment in another.

Child life intern

June 2019 • Hackensack, NJ

What I liked

I was stationed in the general pediatrics unit at Hackensack Meridian Health. I loved how I got the first hand experience to see “days in the life of a child life specialist“. I want to peruse a profession as a child life specialist in the near future.. these specialist are support systems for patients and their families. Make the pediatric patients more comfortable in the hospital setting and ensure a happy, healthy, safe environment for them to get their minds off of the negatives as to why they are in the hospital. My daily tasks were to: clean and sanitize all toys patient has touch to ensure no germs are spread, visit patients rooms and bring toys, arts and crafts, and ensure that the pediatric playroom and teen lounge were organized and clean. I loved helping these kids and making sure they were happy 24/7.

What I wish was different

I wished I was more clinically involved.

Advice

If you care about children and want to make their lives happy ; as well as wanted to go in child life profession.
