Hoar Construction

Building Science Intern

May - August 2019 • Birmingham, AL

What I liked

It was a great opportunity to receive project management experience and hands-on learning as well. I liked working on the construction site. I also became certified in using ProCore construction management software. I really liked working with Hoar and hope to intern with the company again next summer.

Advice

I think it's important to be wide open to learning when you do an internship. I learned so many new things about the construction industry and was challenged too. I gained a lot of confidence by being challenged.

What I liked

It was very cool to see inside what I learn from business into a different industry. I was able to use a lot of my knowledge that translates to other industries in a similar but unique way. Plus, I learned a lot and thought they were a great company.

What I wish was different

Not much, but sometimes I was light on work and was sitting around with not much to do. However, I would always go out of my way to find someone who needed help or for an opportunity to learn.

Advice

My advice would be to always try to stay busy and always be looking for opportunities to learn. You get out what you put into it. Many times I would have to take the first step to putting myself in a learning situation, instead of my supervisor asking me to do something. It’s always about your effort and how you can learn from them!
