House Democratic Caucus

Congressional Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved my coworkers and the office environment I got to experience. I was encouraged heavily to network and take full advantage of my time there, which was wonderful, and all of my coworkers (from my intern coordinator to the executive director of the office) were extremely available to chat with me and help me build my network. They all took personal interest in my career and me as a person and did their best to create opportunities for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done more substantial work, but what lacked in work was made up for in networking and shadowing opportunities - for instance, although my main responsibilities were operations based (setting up congressional events, etc.), the office I worked in made sure to connect me to people that work in a field closer to my direct interests, to put me on events related to my personal interests, etc. Additionally, my intern coordinator knew I was interested in policy work and made sure to connect me with our office's policy team and let them know I was enthusiastic to help out.
