What I liked

I liked the team and the workplace culture. Everyone was very friendly and eager to teach interns - no question was deemed annoying.

What I wish was different

In terms of investment banking, I wouldn't have asked for anything different. However, it might've been nice to have more social events for interns to get to know one another, which might've been more common at other banks.

Advice

Get used to long hours and make friends with your team so that you have the most enjoyable experience. Also, make sure to speak to people from different teams.

Summer Analyst

What I liked

This internship was in Markets and Securities Services, aka Sales & Trading. The structure of the internship program was great; it combined learning modules about some of the different products/securities that are traded as well as projects/challenges. There was also plenty of time for us to take on projects specific to the desks we were assigned to and to take initiative to spend time with other desks one-on-one to gain a deeper understanding of how each functioned. The people at this firm are really top-notch and the work environment isn't toxic. I highly recommend trying an internship at HSBC.

What I wish was different

I wish there was the opportunity to choose our home desk for our first rotation.

Advice

Don't wait around for others to give you work - take initiative and find ways to add value to the firm.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed that the internship program was open for rising juniors. Having an internship under my belt this early on opened my eyes to the world of investment and solidified my interests in pursuing investment banking as a future career. The program was catered towards education, and I found it extremely impactful.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity to float around to different groups. As a Rising Junior, I was placed into the Structured Finance team. I had a great experience with the team, and everyone was extremely kind, hardworking, and helpful; however, I do wish I could have been exposed to other groups as well.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give to others who are looking at this internship experience is to take full advantage of all the resources presented to you. Any free time you have should be used towards meeting new people and expanding your network through meaningful relationships. Always keep a positive outlook and get to the office first with a smile on your face ready for the day to begin!

HSBC had a collaborative culture and capped hours for interns at 50. Interns were treated very well and analysts were willing to help interns on tasks.

Retail Banking Wealth Management Intern

What I liked

It was very quick paced and I always had something to keep my busy.

What I wish was different

The layout of the "office" was a bit difficult. Everyone is just in the big open floor with long tables and individual laptops. It's very loud and you are not even guaranteed a place to sit, and there's nowhere to store your things.

Advice

If you are trying to see if the city environment is for you, or just want a short experience with a company to see what it's about, this is a great opportunity to do that. It's only a ten week internship so it's a good non-committal way to figure out what you like and don't like.

Just because something is done a certain way doesn't mean that's the best way. Share any suggestions you have and bring in your outside knowledge and experience, you can create a lot of opportunities for change.

Rising Junior Internship Program - Global Markets

What I liked

I liked learning all about sales and trading and being able to shadow each desk on the trading floor to get a better idea of what it is like it work in this industry and on the trading floor.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was assigned more hands on tasks to get a better sense of the workload, working with excel, and applying what I learned to a project.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share would be to be to take initiative and to ask questions. Everyone is constantly looking at how engaged you are and how interested you are in learning more about the industry. There are no stupid questions, so any question is a good question and a good way for the employees to see what and how you are thinking.
