Illumina

Systems Integration Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

This internship was an amazing experience. They really spoiled the interns, there were events where they brought a bunch of food trucks to their campus that gave us free food, a fair, etc. They also have sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, a soccer field, a gym, and a great cafeteria for employees.

What I wish was different

I wish they had helped us find housing more, even with the stipend finding housing was difficult. Maybe giving us the option to get housed by them in one of the hotels nearby or getting the stipend would have been nice.

Advice

Go in ready to meet new people, work hard, and have the best summer of your life!

Process Development Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Overall, it was a great experience. The internship went remote due to Covid but they went above and beyond to make sure we still got a good experience and were able to meet other interns virtually. Everyone was very willing to talk to you and answer and questions you had about absolutely anything. My project was interesting and I was able to learn a lot from my team, manager, and technical mentors.

What I wish was different

Of course I wish I had been able to go to San Diego but that was the only thing I wish had been different.

Advice

Use time in any internship to talk to as many people as possible both in your field and outside. It is interesting to hear how people got where there are today and this can help you figure out where you can see yourself in the future. Everyone is happy to talk to interns so take advantage of this!

Process Development Engineering Intern

What I liked

My internship with Illumina was extremely impactful to my personal and professional growth. Though the experience was virtual, I was able to learn a lot about the company and the biotechnology industry, and had the chance to network with other interns and coworkers of all different backgrounds and experience-levels. The inclusive, fun, and collaborative company culture was very conducive to my own learning and kept the virtual experience very engaging throughout the whole summer. Overall, Illumina is a great company to work for who handled the transition to the online experience exceptionally well; I'd recommend their program to anyone!

SEC Filings and Revenue Intern

June - December 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Such a great learning experience. The team I worked with was super supportive, lots of OSU grads to network with, and I learn about so much I never came in contact with at school. Illumina's goal is to change medicine through the integration of next-generation sequencing and uncoding the genome. Everyday you can take pride knowing you play a part in the future of cancer research.

What I wish was different

COVID-19 kept me from going to San Diego for the summer. Remote work was more difficult than an in person internship and working west coast time was very difficult.

Advice

Try and network as much as possible. The business is a complex model with multiple stakeholders and revenue streams so understanding the business is paramount. Ask a lot of questions and the high intensity culture will give you back what you put in.

Research Associate Intern

May - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

A comprehensive and fun internship program at a great company. There were many interns (~88 in San Diego) in all different job functions. There were also plenty of events for interns to come together and build friendships. The managers trusted interns with job duties, but the hours were reasonable (40-45hrs on average). The company culture is outstanding, with a motivated, collaborative culture.

What I wish was different

Would have liked to have received a return offer.

Advice

If you embrace the company's culture and care about the impact you make, this company is for you.
