Everyone that works at the company is so nice and welcoming, and the internship was incredibly valuable. They put a heavy emphasis on teaching me and providing many opportunities for me to experience what a research job is like. It was very well set up and organized!

Biochemistry Research Intern

What I liked

The summer internship provided me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a research field different from the research I do in the UVA chemistry department. Additionally, it allowed me to observe the drastic differences between commercial and academic research.

What I wish was different

Sometimes, I wished that I was allowed to be more independent. I came from a lab at UVA where I had earned a lot of independence the past semester, and I began this summer internship and essentially had to start over and earn everyone's trust there to demonstrate my bench-top intelligence.

Advice

Take the opportunity to ask lots of questions about how specific protein purification techniques work. As a biochemistry major, I learn about the various techniques in classes, but I had never been able to apply them in a true research setting. I always found it fascinating to ask about the chemistry behind the various techniques and procedures we performed over the course of the summer. The internship is shaped to be a learning opportunity for the students, so take full advantage of that.
