Iowa Department of Transportation

Cybersecurity and Networking Intern

September 2020 • Ames, IA

What I liked

I really appreciated the flexibility that my boss had when working with my schedule, especially when school started. I likely wouldn't have continued it into the school year if they were not as flexible as they were. I also appreciated that I got to work with both the hands-on installing of the network equipment, but also the backend configuration of the equipment.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten more opportunities to do more hands-on installments and in-person learning with the team, however, this was very hard because of COVID. I did appreciate the flexibility but I never really felt like I knew the members of the team because I never met most of them in person.

Advice

It is a good opportunity for those interested in the computer field, I thought it would be awesome coming in even though I am more focused on software development at school. I learned that this field wasn't for me though, I would recommend that people who think it might be enjoyable try it out as the team and boss are very flexible with their interns.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Manchester, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the construction experience and how I was highly valued at the Iowa Department of Transportation. I earned valuable experience and had a lot to talk about in my interviews during my last semester of college. I also enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and build lifelong relationship with some of my co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more resources to research about the internship or wish I would have talked to someone about their experience because it quite literally is a win-win situation for any person in their college career to seek an internship as early as possible. I was scared at first but I wish I would have applied sooner because I highly enjoyed it.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is absorb as much as possible and don't be scared to ask questions. As long as you are confident and willing to work hard you will be successful. As soon as you can get into that internship because there is a high percentage you will be hired as an intern and the job experience is needed for when you graduate to receive that dream job you are searching for. Even if you do not know what path you want to take during college an internship is a great way to peak your interest in many different fields.
