Chemistry Research Intern

May - September 2019 • Harrisonburg, VA

What I liked

I loved being able to work on my own project to discover new and exciting information in the biochemical field that will be used in the future. I worked mostly on my own schedule (scientific research doesn't exactly comply with a 9-5 schedule) and could plan out my tasks for the week in the most efficient way possible. I also had access to the chemistry building so I could work on the weekends if I felt like my project needed some extra time. I got to make connections and friendships with professors and fellow research students!

What I wish was different

I wish the summer was longer! A lot of my research took weeks of protein preparation so I didn't have much time to collect raw data for presentations. Luckily, I get the privilege to continue working throughout the year and present at the biophysical convention in San Diego this February!

Advice

You get out what you put in to it! If you're lucky enough to secure a position within a professor's research lab, find an aspect of the project you are passionate about and put you're all into it. After all, this is their life work and it deserves your respect and effort!
