What I liked

I like my proximity to the professor under whom I was working, the professor himself, the predictable, methodical nature of the work that centered around the supplied readings, the variety of options I had in terms of experiment ideas, the control I had in my research opportunity, the location in which I was researching, and the wealth of knowledge I attained in the short time-span.

What I wish was different

I wish I had not had to deal with Campus Life (though, to be fair, they gave me a nice room after short warning), that I had more time for the lab and at-home components of the job, and that the lab in which I had worked was not so cold.

Advice

If you are going to get involved in research, do so immediately--as in as a freshman, which is when you have easier classes, a better excuse for not knowing anything, the time in which learning quickly makes the most difference, and an opportunity directly after some batch or seniors has graduated. Exacerbating this, some professors also seem to construct their research groups on a periodic basis so they can work with mostly the same people over four years and maintain the same expectations throughout. If you quickly find a professor reconstructing a research group, get accepted to the group, and work well under the professor, you may have a relationship you can develop over the next four years.
