College Teaching Assistant

August 2019 • Gambier, OH

What I liked

Hours are consistent, supervisor is compassionate and aware that we are students ourselves.

What I wish was different

No complaints- the position had to make some adaptations due to the pandemic, but those aren't issues with the position but with circumstances.

Advice

Make sure you want to work with students- a lot of this job is communications.

Admissions Summer Fellow

May - August 2021 • Gambier, OH

What I liked

Great atmosphere and co-workers (including bosses and fellow students). It was a flexible job, with options to take off work when needed (whether a planned vacation or individual days). I liked how every day was different and how students really got a lot of responsibility and truly helped run the office, getting to know the ins and outs of so many different aspects of how Kenyon runs its admissions office and process.

What I wish was different

Scheduling vacations was a little bit tricky, and people seemed to be on slight different pages about how to handle that professionally. While I felt like it was iterated clearly, I think it would be helpful for supervisors to reiterate a few times at the beginning of the summer and get a firm schedule of time off then. This would help mitigate the chaos of the later summer.

Advice

Great job if you like talking about Kenyon, and have a genuine interest in welcoming people to campus, while also learning how to navigate a little bit of day to day chaos. Flexibility and positivity are incredibly important.

Summer Conferences Liaison

June - August 2018 • Gambier, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the work itself (i.e. communicating with clients about their needs upon their arrival to Kenyon's campus), as well as the collaboration between myself and my team members. I also appreciated how considerate and helpful my boss was.

What I wish was different

The job was a bit overwhelming at times as it required us to work 7 days per week, and to be on call at all hours. However, it was well worth it.

Advice

While this job isn't explicitly available for other Williams students, I definitely would recommend a similar job to my peers. The most valuable thing that I learned from the experience is that when a task requires constant communication between 10 or more people from different departments, it's very important to designate tasks to specific people so that effort is not duplicated.
