It was very inclusive and provided a lot of opportunities for each of the counselors to gain new skills. We learned how to kayak, swim, surf, and shoot, and play various competitive games with the children. Such as Golf, tennis, pickleball, squash, and bocce ball. Along with learning valuable skills like CPR, and preventative measures for child abuse. The staff were very kind people, and each of them was sure to create a meaningful relationship with you regardless of whether were worked in the same field or position.
What I wish was different
I wish the program would have given more detail before relocation to another state. I received basic information but it was very close to the departure date, which did not leave much time for preparation.
Advice
I would be prepared for a delayed first check, as well as a basic wardrobe for a country club. Descretion is very important at this establishment, because of the guest on the island. If housing is available for you be aware that it can sometimes be an hour's drive into work, and the bus system requires departure an hour early before any shift. It is a very beautiful island, so make sure you enjoy the atmosphere and the nice views.

What I liked
I loved the Charleston area so much. I also really enjoyed working with new people and getting to create relationships with them. I also loved interacting with the guests that were staying at the Sanctuary.
What I wish was different
I was a food runner and I learned a lot about communication and customer service skills. Although, I wish I had the chance to learn more managerial things as well. (Ex: making the schedule, putting in orders, etc.)
Advice
It is an absolutely wonderful experience. Kiawah is such a special place and if you are ever given the opportunity to work there, definitely take it! Be ready to work long hours in this internship.

Guest Service Agent

What I liked
Management within front office was efficient and well run, and the experience itself was very valuable in providing insight and hands on experience within the hospitality industry. Forbes Five Star standards were taught and implemented constantly, which is a very valuable skill to have for future opportunities.
What I wish was different
I wish that the hours had more consistent throughout the summer, as I worked a lot of overtime at the beginning of the summer and then had significantly less than full time hours towards the end of the summer. I also wish that the employer provided housing was closer to the location of the resort, as it was located very far away and the commute was fairly long each day.
Advice
Ask for the opportunity to shadow in other departments, always been professional, and absorb every experience and piece of knowledge, as it will help you immensely.
