Mechanical Engineer

May - December 2019 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the atmosphere that Kohler had to offer. Scheduling and attending meetings troubleshooting engineering problems.

What I wish was different

Not really too sure!

Advice

DON'T BE SCARED! What helped me with my co-op was being eager to meet new people. Instead of waiting around for things to get fixed, I took initiative whether it was going to the machine shop, construction, calling contractors, scheduling meetings, etc.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - December 2019 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

It was a vastly liberated experience. I was working on new product development, so whatever I and the team I was on worked on was new territory to discover. Nobody had done the work we had yet, so we were the ones setting how to design these products.

What I wish was different

The only thing is that I wish that Kohler was near Madison. Seeing that I'll be moving there next year to live with my future wife, the two hour commute one way does not sound appealing for a full time job. I will miss the place after leaving.

Advice

Take risks. Trying a prototype only to watch it completely destroy itself makes infinitely more progress than hesitating and second guessing your designs. The risk taker is the winner.

Plant Quality Engineering Co-op

January - August 2019 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I really liked that I got to learn a lot about quality engineering that I wouldn't learn or experience from just my classes. Being able to experience the day to day responsibilities of a quality engineer along with working with other engineers really helped me to confirm the career path I would like after graduation. Kohler also has a lot of different divisions, from kitchen and faucets to generators, and during my internship there, I was able to learn more about the different divisions and engineering oppurtunities.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed my internship and there is not much I would change. I had a lot of responsibilities and projects throughout my internship and I even got a few chances to present my projects. However, if I had to change something, I would have liked more day to day work. I preferred super busy days rather than days where I only had a few tasks. It was nice that I had time to attend the intern events that Kohler planned for us.

Advice

Some advice I would give would be to always ask questions. In the beginning of my internship, I was worried about seeming unqualified and complety clueless if I asked too many questions, but I learned pretty quickly that everyone expects you to be complete clueless. So it is better to ask questions and make sure you understand what you are doing and why so that you can do the best job possible.

What I liked

Working on the Quality team in a manufacturing environment gave me many opportunities to learn about manufacturing throughout the whole business. Quality is involved in all aspects whether it be finished products, processes and supplier parts. It helped me learn a lot about processes and overall manufacturing experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work with my boss more, I mostly worked with other co-workers and other engineering teams.

Advice

Make a good impression on every single person you work for or with. Always do good work. Try to meet and network with as many people as possible.

Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2019 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed all the opportunities for the interns. They have an intern program that allows you to learn a lot about the company and different areas, as well as many networking opportunities. I also loved the flexible work schedule, and ability to learn in depth about what the supply planners do on a daily basis.

What I wish was different

I had an amazing experience at Kohler and don't really have anything I would want to change. After a summer there, I would like to go back and work for the company full time.

Advice

When looking for internships, they take time and patience. Don't get frustrated if you don't get one right away. Every company has a different timeline and if you are truly passionate about working for them, you will be able to accept that.
