L3Harris Technologies

Software Engineer Intern

June 2020 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

It was great to see how the code I write fits into a the scheme of a larger project, and how the people around me helped me understand the context for which I was writing my code.

What I wish was different

I really had a hard time working from home. To this day, I haven't even stepped foot onto the workplace campus, and I felt isolated while waiting for responses and answers to my questions.

Advice

Don't be afraid to frequently ask questions and stay in contact! There are many people that can and want to help, even if they are quite busy.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2021 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

I liked the constant check ups I received from the engineer who was leading my team. I also enjoyed working in a team. That way, if I was confused I could easily talk to someone who was working on the same thing as me. I liked using what I learned in class, specifically Linux, C, and Scrum. I enjoyed learning about Confluence and Jira.

What I wish was different

I wish my mentor from the company would have reached out. I also wish I wasn't as hard on myself after all, I was just an intern.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

Project-based internship allowed flexibility and independence in role. Also had a mentor in which I can utilize as a resource. Lots of different people to work with, making it very fun.

What I wish was different

I would like to engage in a little more of the actual role of an MPE while tending to my projects.

Advice

Always ask questions and take charge of your experience. Take every opportunity you can to learn something new.

Communication Intern

June - August 2021 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

This internship was an incredible introduction into the professional world. While my internship was online, the entire team had weekly meetings and my manager and coworkers were always happy to help. I was introduced to the philanthropic side of the company, working on getting other interns involved in volunteering, as well as completing preliminary research for the international roll-out of the company's volunteer program. It was a great experience, and a great introduction to one of the many possibilities of International Business.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions or think outside of the box. While both are cliché pieces of advice, they are helpful to remember, especially when first entering the professional world.

Software Engineer Intern

May - July 2023 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved my team and my manager. They were all so supportive of me and willing to help me every step of the way. I definitely did not have much experience in software engineering in general, but everyone taught me a little as the summer went on. I learned a lot of valuable skills from this summer.

What I wish was different

I was a little bit disappointed with the lack of intern intern interaction during the summer. I wish I could have met more of my fellow interns and interacted with them on a regular basis instead of just once at the beginning of the summer and once at the end.

Advice

Reach out to people in the workplace! You'll find that everyone wants to see you as an intern succeed and are more than happy to help you along the way to success.

Software Engineering Intern

January - May 2023 • Greenville, TX

What I liked

Good pay. Learned how to conduct business with professionalism.

What I wish was different

Not much learned as team members kept leaving and new comers filled the team where I ended up being the expert on the team with less than 3 months experience. Management was also not accommodative as they were the reason no mobility or learning was offered.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - September 2023 • Clifton, NJ

What I liked

I loved the work environment, everyone from managers, new hires, and other interns is willing to help out. I love how L3 employees reached out to me and ensured I was prepared. They always put me in the best position to succeed and kept in contact with me to ensure they gave me tasks in my best interest. I also really liked the encouragement to determine what type of learning experience I will have here. If there was help needed in a program different than mine, I was more than welcome to ask to do a task for that program.

What I wish was different

I was working on a heavy program and I wished I stayed long enough to see it through.

Advice

Do not be afraid to make mistakes. You are there to learn and make the most out of your time, the more involved you are, the better connections you will make with others. Please ask a ton of questions and pick everyone's brain, I can't stress that enough. The experience I gained at L3Harris goes far beyond anything I have done in school.
