Lake Bryn Mawr Camp

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Honesdale, PA

What I liked

Great community, chance to connect with kids, genuinely fun a lot of the time, supervisors care about you and your work. This camp has A LOT of money in it, which means that there's a lot happening. If you've worked at less affluent camps in the past, the kids being able to afford meds/therapy for whatever issues they're facing can make a big difference.

What I wish was different

By camp standards, this one is SUPER image-oriented. They also tend towards coddling campers--not excessively, per se, but since it costs parents so much to send their kids there they can't be sending negative letters and phone calls home, you know? Behavior problems from campers tend to stem from knowledge that they are unlikely to face any consequences for their actions.

Advice

Be very up front with talking to supervisors when you need help. They do what they can. Do not appear outwardly upset with campers under ANY circumstances.

General Athletics and Volleyball Program Director

June - August 2018 • Honesdale, PA

What I liked

I love gaining experience in many different areas and getting the opportunity to impact many girls' lives for the better.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more open and more creative in both my program area and with people.

Advice

Kids will test you to see how far you will let them go; don't give up your ground, earn their respect, and bond with them. The first week will always be rough but it will be so much better once they respect you.
