Lander University

Barn Worker

November 2021 - June 2022 • Greenwood, SC

What I liked

This job was an excellent ay to meet other students at Lander who are outside my department, and work with animals. I also enjoyed helping the equestrian team to work with the Burton Center in the therapeutic riding program, and helping prepare for competitions both out of town and at home. I also loved working with Tara Slatton, the barn director, she allows you to have a flexible schedule and is understanding of school responsibilities. Overall, the staff are all very nice and helpful, and make sure you're prepared to do your job safely.

What I wish was different

There is very little I would have changed about my experience working at the Lander Equestrian Center, the only issues I had (which I wouldn't even consider "issues") were between coworkers, and about people not having the same standards for work ethic. Everyone at the Equestrian Center showed up for shifts early, and were eager to work, and felt strongly about providing excellent care for the horses.

Advice

If someone were to apply for this position, I would recommend that they try to make friends, and not take themselves too seriously, or assume that they know everything because they've worked with horses before. You may know a lot about horses, but you may not know how to work at this specific barn, so be open to learning, and allow people to help you, because people aren't out to get you. Everyone at the Equestrian Center wants you and others to do a good job, and when they try and teach you something, it's generally to keep you safe, or to safe you some time.
